Rusizi district: This Sunday, 05 October 2025, believed to be drunk ,Eurelia Mukankusi was found dead after falling into the uncovered pit near road construction site.
The bad scene took place on this Sunday 05 October 2025 in Mpongora village,Gatsiro cell,in Gihundwe sector.
Information indicates that a 64-year-old woman named Eurelia Mukankusi who lived in Rubenga II Village, Kagara Cell, Gihundwe Sector, Rusizi District, was found dead in a roadside drainage channel early in the morning around 6:00 a.m.
Some residents who spoke to media, on condition of anonymity said that they had long raised concerns about open holes and ditches dug along the road without warning signs, posing a danger to many people who use the road regularly.
One resident said:”We are troubled by these open pits dug along the road without any signs to warn people. Even though this elderly woman fell into the drainage, we fear that others may also fall. We urge the authorities to put up warning signs wherever such ditches exist.”
According to residents, the last time they saw the woman was on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at around 3:00 p.m. They later found her body in the drainage on Sunday, October 5, 2025. It is believed that she had fallen into the pit during nighttime .

The Gihundwe Sector authorities too confirmed the incident where they said that they learned about the incident in the morning after being informed by people who had gone to play football nearby.
Theophile Kayiranga, the deputy executive secretary of Gihundwe Sector in charge of finance and administration — who is also acting as the sector’s executive secretary — confirmed the incident:
“Yes, the reports are true. The elderly woman, identified as Eurelia Mukankusi aged 64, was found dead in a drainage trench along the road under construction. We received the news at around 6:00 a.m. from local football players.” he said.
He added that, according to information from her family, the deceased was known for drinking alcohol and often returned home very late, leading authorities to suspect that her death may have been caused by intoxication.
> “Her family told us she was known to drink and often came home late at night. It is suspected that her death resulted from alcohol consumption. Neighbors said she had gone to drink in Shagasha Cell.”
In his message to residents, Kayiranga urged people to avoid excessive drinking and to refrain from walking home late at night. He also promised that the local administration would advocate for the completion of the road and ensure that all open ditches are properly covered.
The various agencies ,including the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), the National Police, and local authorities — arrived at the scene.
The deceased’s body was taken to Gihundwe Hospital for post-mortem examination.
