MUSANZE: RNP, The Rwanda National Police arrested two men who started the production of illicit alcohol they named ‘Nzoga Ejo’ (I will wash my body tomorrow).
It took place on this Thursday, October 09th 2025, in Musanze district, Gacaca sector, Gakoro cell ,in Gahama village.
These two men were caught in the operation of police forces after the citizens informed the police that at the houses of these two men , there be brewed the illicit alcohol.
It is made using sugar, Pakmaya yeast, and other ingredients.
During that police forces operation, one thousand and three hundred litres (1300L) of that illicit alcohol was destroyed by police forces.
The Northern Province Police Spokesperson, IP Ignace Ngirabakunzi, told Umuseke that people who drink “Nzoga Ejo” become weak and lose the strength to engage in development activities.
He said: “We urge citizens to avoid consuming beverages that do not meet quality standards, and those who produce them are advised to stop; if they don’t, they are arrested and the products are destroyed.”
He added that, in cooperation with other institutions, they will continue to educate citizens about the harmful effects of drinking such alcohol and its impact on public security in general.
He said: “Often, those who drink these beverages are the ones who cause insecurity, violence, and family conflicts.”
IP Ngirabakunzi stated that consumers of this alcohol testify that it makes them sick and leads them into poverty — which is why authorities are urging the public to avoid it.
In Musanze District, various types of substandard alcoholic drinks are commonly reported, including those known as “Nzoga Ejo,” “Muhenyina,” “Umutaragweja,” “Yewe muntu,” and others.
Security organs, local authorities, and residents continue to strengthen efforts to combat this issue, with offenders being punished and the seized alcohol destroyed.
