Rusizi: A one month married woman attempts suicide after being insulted by husband that she is not good in bed, night patrol intervenes

As the newspaper Radiotv10Rwamda says, a one month married woman from Muganza Sector in Rusizi District narrowly survived an attempted suicide after her husband allegedly humiliated her by telling her she was not “good in bed” compared to another woman he previously lived with.

The incident occurred on the night of December 26, 2025, at around 2:00 a.m. in Nyabishunju Village. The woman, Josiane Itangishaka had been married for only one month to Ntirugiribambe Alfred.

According to local authorities, the couple was in their bedroom when the husband reportedly told his wife that his former partner was better than her. He allegedly went as far as showing her photos of the former woman on his phone, saying she was the one who satisfied him, while telling Josiane that “nothing about her was working.”

Deeply hurt and angered by the remarks, Josiane reportedly took a piece of loincloth (a traditional kitenge) and left the house. She went to a nearby avocado tree and began tying the cloth around her neck with the intention of hanging herself.

Fortunately, members of the community night patrol were nearby and noticed her suspicious behavior. According to Shara Cell Executive Secretary, Aimable Siboman, the patrol initially observed her quietly before realizing she was attempting to take her own life.

“When they saw her start to tie the cloth around her neck, they immediately stopped her and called me. I rushed to the scene and found that she was indeed about to commit suicide,” Aimable said.

Local authorities intervened immediately and questioned both parties. After assessing the situation, they concluded that the couple was incompatible, despite having been married for only one month. Mediation efforts followed, during which household items were shared between them, and the husband agreed to give the woman 20,000 Rwandan francs as compensation.

Later that night, Josiane was escorted by local leaders and the night patrol back to her family home in Gitambi Sector.

The acting Executive Secretary of Muganza Sector, Patrick Niringiyimana, strongly criticized the husband’s behavior, particularly the act of showing photos of another woman to his wife and comparing them.

“This behavior is completely unacceptable. We advise citizens to think carefully before entering marriage and to live together legally and respectfully. When you decide to build a home, you must let go of past relationships and commit to one family,” he said.

Authorities further revealed that the man had previously lived with another woman with whom he has eight children—the same woman he claimed was “better.”

She reportedly later left him and moved to Kigali with another man, after which he married Josiane. Josiane herself is said to have three children from a previous relationship and has now returned to her family in Gitambi.

Local leaders used the incident to remind the public of the importance of mutual respect in marriage and warned against emotional abuse, which can have serious and life-threatening consequences.
