Guinea-Conakry: Gen Doumbouya wins presidential election
Guinea-Conakry’s electoral commission has announced that Gen Mamady Doumbouya, who has led the country since 2021, has won the presidential election with 86.72% of the vote.
The election was held on 28 December 2025. Gen Doumbouya competed against eight other candidates, including former government officials and opposition figures.
His closest challenger, Yéro Baldé of the FRONDEG (Front démocratique de Guinée) party, came second with 6.51% of the vote.
Speaking on 30 December, the President of the Electoral Commission, Djanabou Touré, stated that voter turnout reached 80.95% of the approximately 6.7 million registered voters.
The announced results remain provisional until they are validated by Guinea-Conakry’s Supreme Court. The final and official results are expected to be confirmed within eight days.
Gen Doumbouya came to power in September 2021 after overthrowing former President Alpha Condé. At the time, he assured the public that neither he nor other military leaders involved in governing the country would seek the presidency.
However, in September 2025, Guinea-Conakry held a constitutional referendum, in which nearly 89% of voters approved revisions to the Constitution.
These changes allowed Gen Doumbouya to run for president.
Under the previous Constitution, a presidential term lasted five years, but the newly adopted Constitution has extended the term to seven years.
