Truck accident in Nyamasheke claims driver’s life
A heavy truck transporting coal used in cement production from Tanzania was involved in a fatal accident in Bushekeri Sector, Nyamasheke District, resulting in the death of the driver.
The accident occurred in Buvungira Cell, Bushekeri Sector, as the truck, bearing registration number RL 4626, was heading to the CIMERWA cement factory located in Rusizi District. According to reports, the truck lost control while navigating a steep and curved section of the road near the access road to Gisakura Health Center.
The spokesperson of the Rwanda National Police Traffic and Road Safety Department, SP Emmanuel Kayigi, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations into the cause of the accident have already begun. He explained that the truck appeared to be speeding downhill, possibly after losing its braking system, before hitting a roadside embankment and overturning.
“The vehicle reached a sharp slope near the road leading to Gisakura Health Center, sped up as if it had brake failure, hit the embankment, and then overturned onto the roadside,” SP Kayigi said.
The truck was severely damaged in the crash, and the coal it was carrying spilled onto the road and was badly damaged. The driver died on the spot due to the impact.
Authorities have urged drivers, especially those operating heavy vehicles, to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition and to exercise caution on steep and winding roads to prevent similar tragedies.
