Five arrested over murder of 60-year-old man in Rutsiro district
Authorities in Rutsiro District have arrested five people, including a 56-year-old woman, her two children, and two neighbors, following the death of her husband, Gervais Nsengiyaremye , aged 60, who was found dead in his house with severe head injuries.
The incident occurred in Kabiraho Village, Bumba Cell, on January 12, 2026.
According to local authorities, on the night of January 11 to 12, the woman alerted the village leader, claiming that her husband had returned home drunk, fell onto a stone from the house foundation, and died as a result of the fall. However, when local leaders, police officers, and investigators from the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) arrived at the scene, they discovered that Nsengiyaremye had injuries indicating that he had been cut on the head and forehead.
The Executive Secretary of Mushubati Sector, Jean Pierre Mwenedata, confirmed the arrests and said the initial report given by the wife did not match the findings at the scene.
“The responsible authorities arrested five suspects, including the wife of the deceased, their two children, and two neighbors,” he said. “We urge citizens to avoid committing crimes. This is a serious offense punishable by law, and those found guilty may face life imprisonment or long-term sentences.”
He also reminded married couples to seek help from local authorities when facing conflicts, noting that counseling and legal separation are available when disagreements cannot be resolved peacefully.
Reports indicate that the family had long-standing conflicts related to extramarital affairs. Nsengiyaremye had previously been convicted by court over such issues but reportedly continued the behavior after his release, which fueled ongoing disputes within the household.
The suspects are currently being held at the RIB station in Gihango, while Nsengiyaremye’s body was taken to Murunda Hospital for a postmortem examination before burial.
Investigations into the murder are ongoing.
