Kigali:Unusual accident occurs in Kigali on new year’s day
An unusual road accident occurred in Kigali on the first day of the New Year, when a vehicle reportedly lost its brakes and landed on top of a residential house.
The accident happened in the early morning of Thursday, January 1, 2026, in Kamabuye Village, Karambo Cell, Gatenga Sector, Kicukiro District, in the City of Kigali.
At around 7:00 a.m., a Toyota Daihatsu vehicle heading toward Karambo is believed to have lost its brakes. The vehicle descended uncontrollably and eventually landed on the roof of a house where a resident was sleeping at the time.
The person who was inside the house said that upon hearing a heavy impact on the roof, he immediately ran outside to save his life. Fortunately, the driver of the vehicle was not injured either; he managed to escape through the car window.
A resident of the area where the accident occurred said they heard a loud noise and initially thought it was a normal road accident, without imagining that a car could end up on top of a house.
“I heard a very loud bang and thought it was a vehicle crashing into stones. When I came outside, I found a car on top of a house. The roof sheets were damaged, but the driver had already gotten out,” the resident said.
The driver explained that the accident was caused by brake failure. “I lost the brakes, and the car went straight onto the house. I broke the window and jumped out,” he said.
The young man who was sleeping inside the house said he became terrified when he saw a tire above him. “As soon as I heard something hit the roof, I saw a tire and got scared. I heard people screaming and ran outside. That’s when I saw the car on top of where I had been sleeping,” he explained.
No injuries were reported, although the house suffered damage, particularly to the roof.
