MENTAL HEALTH: Severe depression; Understanding the signs, risks, and causes

Depression is a serious mental health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It goes beyond temporary sadness or stress. When left untreated, depression can deeply affect how a person thinks, feels, and lives, and in severe cases, it may lead someone to consider taking their own life.

Understanding the warning signs and causes of depression is essential so that help can come before it is too late.

7 dangerous signs of severe depression

Not everyone with depression will show the same symptoms, but the following signs may indicate a high risk of self-harm or suicide. If several of these signs appear together, urgent support is needed.

1. Persistent feelings of hopelessness

A person may constantly express that life has no meaning, that things will never improve, or that they feel trapped with no way out or no hope to survive in future.

2. Withdrawal from family and friends

Someone with severe depression may isolate themselves, stop answering calls, avoid social gatherings, or lose interest in people they once cared about. That condition in which someone start to like to be alone at all, to be in hidden places.

3. Talking about death or wanting to disappear

Statements like “Everyone would be better without me,” “I wish I could sleep and never wake up,” or frequent discussions about death are serious warning signs.

4. Loss of interest in everything

Activities that once brought joy, like music, work, hobbies, relationships may feel empty or pointless , and no longer enjoying them.

5. Sudden changes in behavior or mood

This can include extreme sadness, anger, irritability, or even a sudden calmness after a long period of pain, which may indicate a person has decided to end their life.

6. Changes in sleep and appetite

Sleeping too much or too little, significant weight loss or gain, and chronic fatigue are common signs of deep depression

7. Feelings of worthlessness or guilt

A depressed person may believe they are a burden, blame themselves for everything, or feel undeserving of love or help.

What are common issues that can cause depression

Depression often develops due to a combination of factors rather than one single cause. Some of them can be:

1. Relationship problems

Breakups, divorce, rejection, abuse, or constant conflict can deeply affect emotional well-being.

2. Financial stress and unemployment

Poverty, debt, job loss, or inability to meet basic needs can lead to feelings of failure and despair.

3. Trauma and loss

The death of a loved one, accidents, violence, or childhood trauma can leave long-lasting emotional wounds.

4. Chronic illness or disability

Living with long-term pain, illness, or physical limitations can lead to depression, especially when support is lacking

5. Social pressure and isolation

Loneliness, lack of community support, discrimination, or unrealistic expectations from society can damage mental health.

6. Substance abuse

Alcohol and drug use can worsen depression and increase impulsive behavior.

7. Lack of mental health support

Stigma, fear, or lack of access to counseling and treatment prevents many people from getting help early.

A message of hope

Depression is not a weakness, and it is not a life sentence. With support, understanding, and proper care, recovery is possible. Listening, showing compassion, and encouraging professional help can save lives.

If you notice these signs in yourself or someone else, reach out immediately,to a trusted person, a mental health professional, or an emergency service. A single conversation can be the beginning of healing.

You are not alone, and your life matters.

End.
