New brides die in cooking gas explosion a day after their wedding in Pakistan
Pakistani police have confirmed that a newly married couple died in a tragic cooking gas explosion that occurred just one day after their wedding, while they were asleep in their home.
According to authorities, a gas cylinder leaked unnoticed, allowing gas to accumulate inside the house before it exploded. In addition to the newlyweds, six other people including family members and guests lost their lives in the blast, while several others were injured.
The incident happened at around 1:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, January 11, 2026 approximately 10:00 p.m. Rwandan time on Saturday, in Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan.
Among the victims were the groom’s mother and his aunt. The powerful explosion caused extensive damage, destroying the newlyweds’ house and severely affecting three neighboring homes.
Emergency response teams reported that the explosion was caused by gas leaking from the cylinder without the occupants’ knowledge, filling the entire room before igniting. Rescue operations were carried out using trained sniffer dogs and advanced technology to search for survivors trapped under the rubble, according to Deputy Police Chief Sahibzada Yousaf.
Reacting to the tragedy, Pakistan’s Senate President, Yusuf Raza Gilani, described the incident as “a heartbreaking tragedy that turned moments of celebration into profound sorrow.”
He emphasized that since many households in Pakistan rely on gas for cooking, relevant authorities must fulfill their responsibilities by enforcing strict safety regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The tragedy has sparked renewed concerns over gas safety and the enforcement of protective measures in residential areas across the country.
