NYAMASHEKE: Executive secretary was assaulted, the suspect arrested
A man identified as Felix Ndagijimana is being held at Shangi Police Station in Nyamasheke District, accused of assaulting and injuring the Executive Secretary of Mariba Cell, where he resides.
According to reports, the assault was allegedly triggered by Ndagijimana’s anger after being removed from the list of beneficiaries of food aid provided to residents affected by prolonged drought. The relief assistance was distributed in Nyabitekeri Sector, where many households have been struggling to secure basic food due to severe dry conditions that recently took place in that sector.
The incident is said to have occurred on the night of January 8, when Ndagijimana reportedly confronted the executive secretary Principe Ngabonziza and physically attacked him, accusing him of denying him maize aid.
At the time of the attack, the Executive Secretary was reportedly in the company of village leaders and members of the community security committee during an inspection of night patrols and local bars.
Speaking to Imvaho Nshya, Ngabonziza explained that the suspect, who appeared to be intoxicated, first questioned the officials about their identities and purpose. Shortly afterward, Ndagijimana allegedly accused them of removing him from the list of maize aid beneficiaries.
“I had not even responded when he pushed me,” Ngabonziza said. “When I asked him why he was pushing me, he punched me in the upper lip, causing a serious injury and heavy bleeding.”
The suspect attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by local leaders and residents who had gathered at the scene. He was then handed over to RIB at Shangi Station.
The injured Executive Secretary was initially taken to Mukoma Health Center and later referred to Bushenge Hospital for further medical examination to rule out additional injuries.
Ngabonziza emphasized that he had no role in removing Ndagijimana from the list of vulnerable beneficiaries, stating that the decision was made by fellow residents who considered the suspect to be financially capable.
Residents of Mariba Cell claim that this is not the first time Ndagijimana has caused trouble, alleging that he is known for violent behavior, especially when intoxicated, which often disrupts community security.
The Executive Secretary of Nyabitekeri Sector, Naphtal Harerimana, confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect committed acts of violence against a local leader and was therefore handed over to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).
“We submitted him to RIB at Shangi Station for investigation,” he said. “The injured official sought medical treatment and was also advised to file a formal complaint with RIB.”
Authorities have urged citizens to refrain from attacking or harassing local leaders, even when dissatisfied with certain decisions. In cases of perceived injustice, residents are encouraged to seek redress through appropriate higher administrative channels rather than resorting to violence.
