Police officer dies in Christmas night in dirt road accident in Kayonza
A police officer on duty lost his life in a tragic road accident that occurred on Christmas night in Kayonza District, Eastern Province.
The accident happened at around 1:00 a.m. on a dirt road in Buhabwa area, located in Murundi Sector. According to family members of the deceased, Police Constable (PC) Habugusenga John was on duty, guarding security together with a fellow officer, when a motorcycle carrying a passenger hit him from behind, knocking him to the ground.
A family member told UMUSEKE our source, that people rushed to help and immediately took him to a health facility. “When he arrived at the hospital, doctors found that he had suffered severe injuries, especially to the ribs and the jaw,” the source said.
The family further revealed that information they received indicated that both the motorcyclist and the passenger were drunk at the time of the accident. The motorcyclist was also injured and is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.
PC Habugusenga was first taken to King Faisal Hospital while still breathing, but in critical condition. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
The Police Spokesperson in the Eastern Province, SP Hamdoun Twizeyimana, confirmed that the officer died following a road accident but said detailed information was not yet available. “I do not yet have full details, but once I receive them, I will share more information,” he said.
PC Habugusenga John was 21 years old and was among the 1,900 young recruits who had recently joined the Rwanda National Police.
He hailed from Kibirizi Village, Rwotso Cell, Kibirizi Sector, in Nyanza District.
The incident has once again raised concerns over reckless driving, especially involving drunk motorcycle riders, and the risks faced daily by security officers while on duty.
The traffic police on duty losing life in Kayonza happened following another recently accident happened in the city of Kigali, where a driver, well-known dj Toxxyk hit the police officer.
The RNP, Rwanda National Police still remind all road users to follow the road guidelines and road instructions.
