Uganda: The Parliament is set to examine and accept the artists copyright law.
As the artist and leading president of the UNMF, Uganda National Musician Federation, Edirisa Musuza known as Eddie Kenzo has announced , they project to examine the Uganda’s artists and their copyright is going to be presented to the parliament so that they study about it
The copyright law project is said after unceasing claims of artists who don’t get the right on their musics and arts, a thing that make them to not get money from what they put their efforts.
Eddie Kenzo said that:”The project has been submitted to the parliament for the first time to be examined. There will follow the second time examination and the debate will continue. As I am told by some of members of Parliament, I hope the copyright law will be accepted by the parliament, and it is vital for us for the failure of the copyright law is desperation to the artists.”
The leading president of UNMF, Eddie Kenzo continued to express that the copyright law will lead to artists get profits from their arts, and that will promote the pure arts , not the today’s music that have not naturality.
The copyright law had been claimed early by Hillary Kiyaga , aka Dr Hilderman, however, then after the government itself took the project in their hands.
In March 2025, Eddie Kenzo met HE president Museveni, and he presented him the findings from first examination of the copyright law.
In general, copyright law is a great idea for it helps the artists to gain the profits and make them grow, however when the artists grow , the country also grow for the artists are other ambassadors of the country to the rest of the world, and they help to build the country Soft Power. The countries like United States has build the very soft power through their entertainment industry, a thing that laterkead to have global audience, not in creative industry only, even in hard power. African feel love for US , mainly because they hear about musicians from there, they watch movies from there, so whenever they see any product from US , they scramble to buy it! This what the soft power does.
For Uganda government it can be very good thing to be the first East African country to put the copyright law into effect, maybe other countries like Rwanda,Kenya ,and Tanzania will need to apply the laws as Uganda will be reaching too far.
